MET's take on the latest NCAA Transfer ruling

By MET Staff

The transfer portal is exploding with many talented players looking for opportunities. On December 13, 2023, a federal judge in West Virginia halted the immediate eligibility restriction prohibiting players from being able to play for up to one season when they've attended three or more schools. The two-time transfer restriction-now halted temporarily, has prevented players from entering the portal, and kept those who have entered sidelined. Those players are now able to play during the 14-day halt. The temporary ruling states that antitrust laws have violated players' rights with the original restriction. The final decision will be delivered on December 27, 2023, by the U.S. District Court Judge.

Our thoughts are that the latest ruling is the right course of action. Players are not in control of collegiate staffing changes and they also can’t control the scholarship impacts. No matter the reason, student-athletes should have the right to change schools when or if needed without penalty. Players shouldn’t be constrained from pursuing better life opportunities to play the sport they love. Student-athletes who are searching for a different degree path than offered at one university should be able to transfer and get the education they deserve.
