In a tragic turn of events, the passing of Utah State defensive back Andre Seldon Jr. left many in mourning. However, amidst the sorrow, a heartwarming gesture emerged highlighting the positive impact of Name, Image, and Likeness programs in collegiate athletics.
Coach Kenny Dillingham and the Arizona State University’s- Sun Angel NIL Collective stepped in to cover the funeral costs for Seldon Jr. On behalf of his brother Myles “Ghost” Rowser, a defensive back for the Sun Devils, Dillingham reached out to Autumn Seldon, the mother of Seldon Jr., stating, “Whatever the expenses are, a donor of the Sun Angel NIL Collective wants to cover them on behalf of Myles.” This showcased the power of this new era in student-athlete compensation.
Understanding the burden that funeral expenses can place on a family, the Sun Angel Collective, Dillingham, and ASU made it their duty to help and form a community to show why the Sun Devils program is led by a family mindset. “It was somewhat shocking and very thoughtful. We hadn’t even wrapped our minds around what happened, and the Sun Devils treated us like family under the circumstances. Given the tragedy, the gesture was comforting and welcomed with sincere appreciation,” stated Seldon
The spontaneous gesture provided relief to Seldon Jr.’s family during a time of immense grief. Not only did this act demonstrate the compassion and generosity of the Sun Devils community but it also highlighted the practical benefits of NIL opportunities and how it can be used in a positive way.
The support extended to the Rowser/Seldon family serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that NIL programs have beyond the realm of athletics. By empowering student-athletes to leverage their personal brand and financial opportunities, universities like Arizona State are enabling them to navigate life’s challenges with greater resilience and security.
As the sports world continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, stories like this one exemplify the potential for positive change and community impact that NIL programs can bring. “People aren’t aware of the positive aspects of NIL. It’s important that we shine light on it. The positive aspect of this situation is that we didn’t have to raise money or start a GoFundMe. ASU was able to leverage NIL donor funding for a charitable act,” said Seldon
Seldon Jr.’s legacy lives not only through his achievements on the field but also through the compassion and support shown by those who rallied around his family in their time of need.
In honoring the memory of Seldon Jr., it reminds people of the importance of compassion, solidarity, and support within the sports community and beyond. The ASU Sun Angel Collective's contribution to covering his funeral costs stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of generosity and unity that binds people together in times of sorrow.
